New to the masjid
Walking into a masjid for the first time is easier when you know what to expect. Here is what a visit is usually like, how to find a masjid near you, and which masjids list a program for new Muslims.
What a first visit is usually like
Every masjid is a little different. When a masjid has added its own notes, its page says more under "Your first visit".
- Shoes. Most masjids ask you to take your shoes off at the door and leave them on a rack or shelf nearby.
- Where to sit. The prayer hall is usually carpeted. It is fine to sit at the back and watch; you do not have to join in. Many masjids keep chairs for anyone who needs one.
- Brothers and sisters. Many masjids have separate entrances or areas for women and men. If you are not sure where to go, ask at the door.
- What to wear. Clean, modest, comfortable clothes are fine.
- When to come. Come a few minutes before a prayer and ask anyone you meet where to go. A masjid's page shows its prayer times.
- Questions. Questions are welcome. Ask a greeter, a volunteer or whoever is at the front desk.

A masjid may still welcome you: its page has its phone number and, under "Your first visit", what to expect. If you run a masjid, you can list a program for new Muslims: add it under Programs every week, and choose New Muslims under "For".
Events for newcomers on Muslim.Red
Muslim.Red lists community events. Organizers can mark an event as for newcomers, and you can filter its list to those.
Words on a masjid's page
- Adhan
- The call that announces a prayer. The time Muslim.Blue shows for it is calculated for the masjid's place.
- Iqamah
- The time the masjid says the prayer starts. A masjid that runs its page publishes it.
- Jumu'ah
- The Friday midday prayer. A masjid's page shows when it is held and in which language the talk is given, where the masjid says so.
